The Widdershins Centre in Sebastopol, Pontypool, recently welcomed the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Rhian Bowen-Davies, for an insightful and meaningful discussion with local older people.

The visit was part of the Commissioner's commitment to hearing directly from older people about the challenges they face and the improvements they want to see in their communities.

Listening to Older People's Voices

During her visit, the Commissioner engaged with around 30 older people, providing them with the opportunity to voice their concerns about the key issues affecting their daily lives. Among the most pressing challenges highlighted were limited public transport options, difficulties accessing healthcare services—especially GP appointments—and barriers caused by digital exclusion.

Despite these challenges, the older people in attendance emphasized the crucial role that the Widdershins Centre plays in their lives. Many spoke about how the services and activities offered help them stay connected, maintain their independence, and access essential support.

Shaping Future Policy and Action

The experiences and insights shared during the visit will contribute to the Commissioner’s upcoming Strategy and Work Plan. By gathering first-hand accounts from older people, she aims to shape policies that better reflect their needs and concerns. The visit to Widdershins is part of a larger initiative in which the Commissioner and her team are traveling across Wales, ensuring older people in every local authority area have a chance to contribute to this important work. Reflecting on her visit, the Commissioner said:

“I’d like to thank everyone at Widdershins for giving me such a warm welcome and for speaking with me about the changes and improvements they’d like to see, and the action they’d like me to take as Commissioner. It was great to see the positive difference that the activities, services, and support provided at the centre are making to the lives of older people - whether that’s accessing services like nail-cutting to help people maintain their independence or simply popping into the on-site Bistro for a cuppa and a catch-up with friends. “The experiences shared will help me develop my Strategy and Work Programme, which will have older people’s voices at its heart.”

A Community Hub for Support and Connection

Run by Age Connects Torfaen, the Widdershins Centre is a vital community hub dedicated to supporting older people. It provides a range of services, including befriending, advice on health and financial entitlements, a nail-cutting service, and a variety of social activities. The centre also boasts an on-site hairdresser and a Bistro, offering nutritious meals and a welcoming space for social interaction.

Angela Reed, Chief Executive of Age Connects Torfaen, expressed her gratitude for the Commissioner's visit:

"We are deeply grateful to the Older People’s Commissioner for visiting the Widdershins Centre. Their visit not only highlighted the critical importance of advocating for the rights and dignity of our older community but also inspired us to further our mission of creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive space for all. The Commissioner’s insights have reinforced our commitment to continuous improvement in our services, and we look forward to partnering with her to ensure every older person feels valued and respected.”

Have Your Say

The Commissioner is keen to hear from as many older people as possible, from all backgrounds and communities. In addition to visiting local groups, she is inviting older people to share their experiences by completing a short questionnaire. Encouraging participation, she added:

“I want to hear from as many older people as possible, from a wide range of different backgrounds and communities, so please do make your voice heard by completing my questionnaire if you can and help deliver positive change for older people.”

The Widdershins Centre’s role in supporting older people in the community is invaluable. With continued collaboration and advocacy, it remains a beacon of connection, care, and empowerment for older people in Torfaen and beyond.
